EV charging: cost, energy and time explained
Practical guidance and important limitations.
Overview
Battery nameplate capacity is not always the usable capacity. Charging losses mean the grid supplies more energy than enters the battery; the effective charging rate also changes by temperature, charge level and charger capability.
Practical steps
For a simple estimate, multiply battery energy added by the inverse of your efficiency assumption, then by your electricity tariff. To estimate time, divide energy added by effective average power, not the charger’s advertised peak alone.
Checks and limitations
Review battery and charger instructions, connector compatibility and local electrical rules. Do not modify household circuits without a qualified electrician.
